Earlier this week I participated in an online meeting with colleagues, students, and alumni of Benedict College to discuss systemic racism in general and specifically, the recent tragic deaths of George Floyd, David McAtee, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arberry.
As we watch the outrage and protests across the world please remember that this is NOT the time to feel good about any of this. No social media posts will bring back the lives of those who have been taken too soon. No post will salve the wounds of injustice that have plagued my community for centuries.
This IS the time for claiming some personal responsibility to do YOUR part to end systemic racism: in law enforcement, in K-12 education, in higher education, and everywhere in between. Many African Americans, myself included, have had figurative knees placed on our necks throughout our lives due to racism. Opportunities have been delayed, lost, or deemed unattainable because of the judgments placed on us because of the color of our skin, not the content of our character. #highereducation #endsystemicracism #itsreal #letsdobetter #IamNOTokay
